PhD scholarship in Pacific Studies

A PhD scholarship based in the School of Culture, History & Language in the ANU College of Asia & the Pacific

Applications are invited from appropriately qualified individuals for a PhD scholarship funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC), through its Laureate award to Professor Margaret Jolly, and the ANU. The PhD position will be part of an ARC funded project on “Engendering Persons, Transforming Things: Christianities, Commodities and Individualism in Oceania”.

Preferred disciplines: Anthropology, History, Political Science or Gender Studies
Program: School of Culture, History & Language (code: 9050)
Value: A$26,669 per annum, tax free paid in fortnightly instalments
Duration: Three years full-time
Closing date for application: 1 August 2011
Commence by: Semester 2 2011 or Semester 1 2012 (with preference for earlier start date)

Eligibility

To hold this scholarship applicants must:

  • have a minimum academic qualification equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree with first class Honours or research Master degree in a relevant discipline;
  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or permanent resident of Australia;
  • not already have a PhD qualification, nor have commenced a PhD programme elsewhere;
  • undertake a research project within the aims of the Project that funds the scholarship.

Applicants should ensure that they nominate three referees who can submit references to the University by the closing date for applications. Applicants must also submit with their application a research proposal that indicates familiarity with the research area and outlines their approach to the PhD research topic.
