Korea Grant Program

The Korea Foundation and the Scowcroft Institute of International Affairs invite applications for research grants on East Asia, including Korea. Research must include, but not be limited to, holdings of the George Bush Presidential Library. The grant program is made possible through the support of the Korea Foundation.

AWARDS: The program awards grants ranging from $500 to $2,500.

DEADLINE: The deadline is November 15th.

LOCATION: The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum is located on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. College Station is served by a number of airlines and is a two hour drive northwest of Houston and a three hour drive south of Dallas- Fort Worth.

The Scowcroft Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) is a research institute housed in the George Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University. The Institute is named in honor of Lt. Gen. Brent Scowcroft, USAF (Ret.), whose long and distinguished career in public service included serving as National Security Advisor for Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush. The Institute’s core mission is to foster and disseminate policy-oriented research on international affairs by supporting faculty and student research, hosting international speakers and major scholarly conferences, and providing grants to outside researchers to use the holdings of the Bush Library.

Funds are awarded for the sole purpose of helping to defray living, travel, and related expenses incurred while conducting research at the George Bush Presidential Library. Topics available for research include, but are not limited to:

U.S. South Korea Trade Relations
U.S. Military Exercises/War Games with and in South Korea (Team Spirit, Ulchi Focus Lens, etc.)
North Korean Nuclear Program
U.S. South Korea Driftnets/Fishery Agreements
President George H.W. Bushs trip to South Korea in January 1992
U.S. arms sales to South Korea
Visits of Republic of Korea (ROK) President Roh Tae Woo to Washington, D.C. in 1989 and 1991

Applicants are required to submit to the institute a research proposal detailing the nature and scope of their research project, a curriculum vita, the names and institutions of three references, and a budget outlining the amount needed for travel, lodging, and any other research expenses. All documents should be submitted electronically as one pdf file. Korea Grant Application should appear in the subject line of the applicants e-mail.

Each application is evaluated by the Library’s archival staff to ascertain that there is material at the Library appropriate for the research topic.

A panel of scholars and administrators from the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum and the Scowcroft Institute reviews the applications to determine the merits of each research topic and its potential contribution to scholarship and decides on funding and funding levels.

Each applicant receives a letter informing them of the panel’s decision. Grantees are informed that the use of their grants is to occur within a year of their award letter. Grantees are issued two checks. One half of the approved funds will be provided in order to assist with travel to the Library. The other half will be issued to the researcher during their research trip. Recipients from countries outside of the United States can only be reimbursed for actual expenses.

Upon conclusion of their research, grantees are requested to submit a brief end-of-grant report to the Foundation and two copies of any publications resulting from their research. The publications will be placed in the George Bush Presidential Library and the Scowcroft Institute of International Affairs.
