Lectureship in physical and human geography (two posts), University of Bristol

This announcement caught my eye first because cultural geography positions are so rare these days, and also because the job announcement itself reflects the disciplinary breadth of geography. Where else would you see “biogeochemical modeller” and “ice sheet modeller” next to “contemporary cultural geography,” all in the School of Geographical Sciences?

Lectureship in Physical and Human Geography (two posts) (ref. 16925)

School of Geographical Sciences

Description

The School of Geographical Sciences seeks to appoint exceptional individuals to enhance its research and teaching. We are particularly seeking candidates in the following strategic areas (a) Contemporary Cultural Geography, (b) Human-Environment Relations, (c) Ice sheet modelling, and (d) Biogeochemical Modelling. We also welcome outstanding applicants from any area of geographical research.

These new strategic appointments build on the huge international success of the School at both research and scholarship level. We are the only Geography department in the UK to be in the top category across every UK government Research Assessment Exercise that have been undertaken since 1986. The new appointments will further strengthen these activities. We have identified four specific areas which we would like to develop, although we also emphasis that we will consider outstanding applicants from any field.

(i) Biogeochemical modeller: We seek candidates who extend our capabilities in carbon/biogeochemical modelling of the terrestrial or in understanding the circulation of the ocean and its biogeochemical cycles. Interest in past, present, and future changes in biogeochemical cycles would be desirable. (ii) Ice Sheet Modeller: We seek to make an appointment in the dynamics of ice flow. Our preference is to strengthen expertise in the application of numerical modelling techniques to glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets. Complimentary areas include the application of field geophysics and satellite observation to the study of ice masses and computational fluid dynamics. (iii) Contemporary Cultural Geography: We seek internationally recognized academics with a preference towards candidates with expertise in fields such as embodiment, materiality, mobilities, performance, cultural politics and/or technology. (iv) Human-Environment Relations: This post is targeted at a scholar with internationally recognised academic expertise in fields such as human-environment relationships, political ecology, environmental governance, environmental economics, environmental behaviour and attitudes, and the geographies of risk.

It is expected that the final selection process will be held on either 3 or 4 May 2012.
