We seek indi­vid­u­als com­mit­ted to cre­ative schol­ar­ship who com­ple­ment and aug­ment the Geography department’s exist­ing strengths in envi­ron­men­tal geog­ra­phy and crit­i­cal human geog­ra­phy. The 5-year Korean Family in Comparative Perspective (KFCP, 2010-) Laboratory for the Globalization of Korean Studies at the University of Illinois, funded by the Academy of Korean Studies, and housed in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, is pleased to announce its sec­ond KFCP Postdoctoral Fellowship start­ing August 16, 2012. This one-year posi­tion, with the pos­si­bil­ity of a one-year exten­sion, is open to: (1) recent PhD recip­i­ents (within the last 5 years) and (2) those who will deposit their dis­ser­ta­tion by August 15, 2012.

The KFCP Laboratory aims to bring the Korean fam­ily to the cen­ter of com­par­a­tive East Asian and gen­eral fam­ily stud­ies, high­light­ing Korea as a pro­duc­tive com­par­a­tive case of inter­est to non-Koreanists across a range of dis­ci­plines and schol­arly loca­tions. KFCP Fellows must be schol­ars inter­ested in com­par­a­tive work on the Korean fam­ily. Scholars with pri­mary exper­tise in the fam­ily of other East Asian coun­tries (e.g., China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan) are par­tic­u­larly wel­come to apply. Scholars with pri­mary research empha­sis on the Koreas must have a con­crete plan to con­duct com­par­a­tive research (i.e., with another country/region). The Postdoctoral Fellowship is open to schol­ars in any human­i­ties or social sci­ence discipline.

The KFCP Laboratory is directed by anthro­pol­o­gist Nancy Abelmann and includes 3 KFCP Laboratory Fellows: Jungwon Kim (EALC and History, University of Illinois), Seung-Kyung Kim (Women’s Studies, University of Maryland), and Hyunjoon Park (Sociology, University of Pennsylvania). The 2011 – 13 cur­rent Postdoctoral Fellow is his­to­rian of China, Elizabeth LaCouture (History, Colby College)

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be wel­comed to an active Koreanist com­mu­nity at the University of Illinois that includes a biweekly Korea Workshop (that will actively engage the themes of the Laboratory). The KFCP Fellow will be pro­vided the oppor­tu­nity to par­tic­i­pate in orga­niz­ing a Korean Family Colloquium Series which grad­u­ate stu­dents will be able to attend for par­tial credit. The KFCP Laboratory will be guided by a National Advisory Board (See list below). KFCP Laboratory Director, Fellows, and National Board Members will take an active role in nur­tur­ing the com­par­a­tive schol­ar­ship of the Postdoctoral Fellow. The Postdoctoral Fellow will also have the oppor­tu­nity to “work­shop” his or her manuscript/s with experts from both on and off campus.

The KFCP Fellow will be paid $40,000 and ben­e­fits. The Asian American Studies Program (AASP) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks two post­doc­toral research asso­ciates for the 2012 – 2013 aca­d­e­mic year. Applicants should con­duct research ger­mane to Asian American stud­ies. Proposed research projects should have the poten­tial to make a sig­nif­i­cant con­tri­bu­tion to the field.

Applicants must be U.S. cit­i­zens or per­ma­nent res­i­dents, must have received a doc­tor­ate or appro­pri­ate ter­mi­nal degree within the past five years or have com­pleted this require­ment by July 31, 2012. They must demon­strate promise for a tenure-track appoint­ment at a research col­lege or uni­ver­sity and their pri­mary research focus must be Asian American, and/or transna­tional Asian pop­u­la­tions in the U.S. and across the Asian Diaspora.

Appointments have a tar­get start date of August 16, 2012, and are for a nine-month period, August 16, 2012 – May15, 2013. Contingent on review, recip­i­ents may be eli­gi­ble for a sec­ond year appoint­ment. Recipients must be in res­i­dence full-time at the University’s Urbana cam­pus for the dura­tion of the appoint­ment, and may not hold other fel­low­ships or awards dur­ing the appoint­ment period. During their stay at Illinois, post­doc­toral research asso­ciates will be expected to par­tic­i­pate in research, teach­ing, and ser­vice. While research and par­tic­i­pa­tion in the intel­lec­tual life of the pro­gram is the pri­mary respon­si­bil­ity, research asso­ciates will be expected to teach a course in Asian American Studies. Postdoctoral fellowship, East Asian Institute, Columbia University

The Weatherhead East Asian Institute invites appli­ca­tions for a post­doc­toral fel­low­ship through the International Network to Expand Regional and Collaborative Teaching (INTERACT) pro­gram at Columbia University. This fel­low­ship is for the aca­d­e­mic year 2012 – 2013 and is open to schol­ars con­duct­ing research on East Asia and Southeast Asia within a global context.

About INTERACT

INTERACT is a pio­neer­ing pro­gram at Columbia University that focuses on devel­op­ing global stud­ies in the under­grad­u­ate cur­ricu­lum through a net­work of post­doc­toral schol­ars focused on cross-regional, trans-regional and inter­dis­ci­pli­nary study. Columbia University will offer sev­eral INTERACT Postdoctoral Fellowships in the 2012 – 2013 aca­d­e­mic year, with can­di­dates selected by cen­ters and insti­tutes across the University. Candidates will func­tion as liaisons between their home office and the INTERACT net­work of schol­ars with other regional and dis­ci­pli­nary specializations.

The Weatherhead East Asian Institute is pleased to offer one INTERACT Fellowship to an out­stand­ing scholar of mod­ern and con­tem­po­rary East Asia with a demon­strated empha­sis on global con­text and con­nec­tions. The fel­low­ship will cover a 10-month period begin­ning August 1, 2012, and comes with a stipend of $45,000 plus ben­e­fits. INTERACT’s pri­mary goal is to improve global lit­er­acy among Columbia stu­dents and equip them to be lead­ers in a glob­al­iz­ing world. These objec­tives will be met through inno­v­a­tive courses, par­tic­i­pat­ing in Institute pro­grams and events, and an annual out­reach event orga­nized col­lab­o­ra­tively by INTERACT Fellows.

Requirements

The Weatherhead East Asian Institute’s INTERACT Fellow will devote half of their time to teach­ing and work­ing with other Fellows on INTERACT pro­gram­ming, and half time to his or her own research and writ­ing. The Fellow’s cur­ric­u­lar respon­si­bil­ity would be to develop one course each semes­ter (Fall 2012 and Spring 2013), in coor­di­na­tion with Columbia’s Global Core Curriculum , focused on East Asia in a global con­text. The Fellow is required to be in res­i­dence in the New York City area and par­tic­i­pate in all activ­i­ties of the INTERACT pro­gram collaborative.

Eligibility

  • Candidates from all East Asian dis­ci­plines and areas of study are wel­come to apply. Geographically this includes China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Tibet, and Mongolia.
  • Recipients of the Fellowship must have received their Ph.D. degree within the past five years (Spring 2007 and after).
  • Recipients must com­plete all their Ph.D. require­ments (com­pleted and filed the dis­ser­ta­tion) by June 30, 2012

USC Korean Studies postdoctoral fellowships, 2012 – 2013

The USC Korean Studies Institute post­doc­toral fel­low­ships, 2012 – 2013

Funded by an insti­tu­tional grant from the Academy of Korean Studies, the USC Korean Studies Institute is accept­ing appli­ca­tions for its 2012 – 2013 post­doc­toral fel­lows pro­gram. Up to two post­doc­toral fel­low­ships will be offered. The post­doc­toral pro­gram is open to schol­ars from all fields whose research per­tains to Korea or that involves Korea as part of a com­par­a­tive or inter­dis­ci­pli­nary research. We par­tic­u­larly encour­age pro­pos­als from the social sci­ences and non-traditional fields, such as Korean-American studies.

In addi­tion to a salary and ben­e­fits, the KSI will pro­vide each fel­low with office space at the KSI and a small research bud­get. The fel­lows are expected to par­tic­i­pate in Institute pro­grams and sup­port the activ­i­ties of the KSI. The Fellow must have a Ph.D. in hand, and should be within 5 years of receiv­ing the Ph.D., by the begin­ning of the appointment.
