See online version here

The Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Race, Inequalities and Global Change that will be located in the Department of Educational Studies. The Canadian Research Chairs Program (http://www.chairs.gc.ca) has been established by the Canadian Federal Government with the purpose of attracting outstanding researchers to the Canadian university system. The successful candidate will be expected to have a strong record of scholarship and a commitment to research leadership. Candidates for Tier 2 Chairs are described by the Canadian Research Chairs Program as ‘exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field’. This is a full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

We are seeking candidates who can contribute to multiple programmatic areas and who come with a broadly critical orientation. Specifically, candidates should be able to contribute to contemporary debates on the new social, political, cultural and economic configurations of racial inequality and the cultural and economic politics of racism in the context of globalization. We encourage applications from scholars representing a wide range of ideological, theoretical, methodological, and interdisciplinary approaches, whose expertise spans the following areas:

  1. The study of racial inequalities and formations as inseparable from other social formations (e.g. class, gender, dis/ability, age, and sexuality);
  2. Cultural studies of educational policies, practices and/or pedagogies;
  3. Critical policy studies illuminating the cultural and ideological struggle in which education is located.

CFP: Constructions of Race and Racism in East Asia: East-West Perspectives

As always, I don’t know anything beyond the CFP below, so please contact the organizers for more information.

Call for papers
Conference on ‘Constructions of Race and Racism in East Asia: East-West Perspectives’
12 – 14 September 2012, Munich

We welcome papers for a conference on Constructions of Race and Racism in East Asia, which will be held at the University of the Armed Forces, Munich, Germany from September 12 to 14, 2012.

This conference follows an earlier book project entitled “Race and Racism in Modern East Asia: Western Constructions and Eastern Reactions” (Brill, 2012). In that project, about half of the participants surveyed and examined the roots of racial constructions of East Asians (principally, Chinese, Japanese and Koreans) in the West and their manifestations during the last 150 years, whereas the other half focused upon the characteristics of local racial constructions and indigenous racism in modern East Asia, with particular attention to the manifestations of racial thought and racism as the result of the ethnic encounter during Japanese colonialism.

During the coming conference, we would like to examine the following topics in the context of East Asia:

  • Sources of modern racism – the interplay between indigenous and foreign perspectives
  • The link between nationalism and racism
  • Racial theories in a transnational perspective
  • The impact of racial thought on mutual images
  • Gender and racial thought

CFP: Black Church Activism and Contested Multiculturalism

Call for Papers
Two day conference at Birkbeck, University of London
May 29th – 30th, 2012

This conference, which is part of an ongoing Transatlantic Roundtable on Religion and Race, will bring together academics, church leaders, practitioners and community activists to explore the role that churches play in the construction of identities in societies where issues of race and racism are played out in the public sphere. We are particularly interested in exploring the role and place of black churches in transitional political, religious and cultural contexts. We welcome conceptual, practical and theoretical papers, individual case studies and comparative work exploring the role that churches play or could play in assisting social, political and cultural transformation in multicultural contexts.

This CFP wins my praise not only for the interesting topic but also for the detailed submission guideline which includes file naming and email subject requirements. It’s brilliant, and I’m going to copy this some day.
